Charles Amanya, a 16-year-old resident of Kabujye cell in Sheema district, miraculously survived being buried alive.
The harrowing incident took place on May 28, 2024, at approximately 10am.
As per the police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the victim (Amanya) was falsely accused of theft, tied to a tree, tortured, and then buried alive by Evans Kamuhanda, 17, and Apollo Kamukama, 43, both from Kaliba cell in Bubaare sub-county.
Despite the ordeal, Amanya managed to escape from the shallow grave where he was left for two days until May 30, 2024.
“The suspects accused the victim for stealing their phones, which forced them to tie him on a tree, where they tortured him. Later in the night, they dug a shallow grave, where they dumped and buried him. The victim managed to crawl out of the shallow grave, to a nearby shack, where he spent two days till the 30.05.2024, at around 6pm, that he was discovered and taken to police. He was transferred to Bubaare Health Centre for treatment.
He emphasized that the Territorial Police in Rwizi Region and Mbarara Central Police Station successfully apprehended the two individuals charged of torture, conspiracy, and attempted murder.
“It is extremely saddening that the victim was held captive, tortured over a missing phone and dumped in a shallow grave by his co-workers. He was fortunate to survive such an ordeal,” he said.
Enanga underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law and refraining from acts of impunity.
He highlighted that torture is a serious offense that can result in death.
He also mentioned that measures are being taken to locate the remaining suspects who are on the run and bring them to justice.
