The Uganda People Congress party (UPC) has recommended the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) as the most effective solution to alleviate poverty among the population.
According to UPC spokesperson, Sharon Oyat Arach, a prosperous Uganda cannot be achieved if its citizens continue to struggle with poverty, especially considering the shortcomings of existing welfare initiatives such as Emyooga and Operation Wealth Creation.
Arach expressed her optimism that the PDM is the sole program capable of alleviating poverty.
She went on to mention that the prevailing industrial unrest is a common occurrence, with a number of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) employees currently participating in a strike.
She also cited that social services such as education and health are experiencing a significant decline. This was during the party’s weekly press briefing at the party headquarters in Kampala.

She stressed that the unjust taxation policies continue to place a heavy burden on the business sector, leading to the closure of some establishments.
She stated that as Uganda prepares to celebrate Day on June 9, 2024, called upon all leaders to come together and work for a common cause and promote the interests of the people.
This year’s year will be marker under the theme: “Hail our heroes; a secure Uganda is now a reality” in Gomba District.
“We need to come together and work for a common cause and promote the interests of our people. When we reflect back and try to project the future, we still have a long way to go which contradicts with the theme of the day. As a country, we need to refocus and place the interests of the citizens of Uganda at heart,” Arach said.
She urged government to streamline the country’s infrastructure by establishing additional schools and hospitals, while also guaranteeing equal access to other opportunities.
She explained that the Luwero triangle comprising of Mpigi, Mubende and Luwero was potentially a rich agricultural potential, but currently, the farmers are encountering difficulties in finding markets for their products and obtaining affordable loans to support their businesses.
“Government should place more emphasis on Agro-processing industries which are still lagging behind. The road network is another obstacle which calls for more improvement,” she advised.
