President Museveni has praised the late UPDF soldier Maj. Patrick Opio Awany who recently died in an Al-Shabaab terror attack in Somalia as a great fighter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his speech read to the mourners by the Vice President of Uganda H.E Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni saluted the late Maj. Opio for his contribution to defending the \u201clegitimate interest of our people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaj. Opio will be remembered for his courage and commitment to his country and the African continent. Therefore, the most suitable tribute and honor for his legacy is for all pro-people forces to continue championing the ideals for which he died,\u201d President Museveni said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sympathized with Awany\u2019s family and the UPDF fraternity for losing a \u201ccomrade who was a great fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maj. Opio, a younger brother to NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and Reserve Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awanyi was serving in the African Transmission Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was laid to rest on Sunday in his ancestry home in Tangi village, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
