{"id":10135,"date":"2024-07-10T14:27:20","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T14:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/?p=10135"},"modified":"2024-07-10T14:27:21","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T14:27:21","slug":"marine-police-kicks-off-search-for-the-body-of-drowned-victim-in-lake-victoria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/10\/marine-police-kicks-off-search-for-the-body-of-drowned-victim-in-lake-victoria\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine police kicks off search for the body of drowned victim in Lake Victoria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Kitts Mabonga<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Marine Police have embarked on a search for an 18-year-old who is alleged to have drowned in Lake Victoria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident occurred on July 9, 2024, at approximately 1745hrs near the Gaba Landing Site in Makindye division, Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deceased was identified as Owen Ntanda, a renowned boat sailor on the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the case is being investigated in collaboration with the Police in Kabalagala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is alleged that on the evening of the fateful day, Ntanda and his colleagues left the landing site and went to a beach house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ug33-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ug33-1.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ug33-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ug33-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/eastafricangazette.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ug33-1-750x563.jpeg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey parked their boat and began swimming as a way of spending leisure time and in the process, he drown,\u201d he noted in statement issued today July 10, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the Gaba Police were informed and promptly took action, and informed the Marine Police to join in and initiate a search and rescue operation but the body has not been found yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Onyango clarified that the ongoing rescue efforts by the police marines and the local community are being hindered by adverse weather conditions caused by heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swim Safe Uganda, a water safety organization reports that over 1000 individuals drown in various lakes in Uganda annually, with most fatalities occurring in Lake Victoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2021, the United Nations adopted a resolution recognizing drowning as one of the primary causes of death worldwide, with an estimated 2,500,000 deaths attributed to drowning in the last ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organization, 90% of drowning cases take place in countries with low income levels, including Uganda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Kitts Mabonga The Marine Police have embarked on a search for an 18-year-old who is alleged to have drowned in Lake Victoria.
