UGANDA: It is a common tradition for people to praise the deceased for their accomplishments and contributions to society.
However, the former students of Kibuli Secondary School, a Muslim-founded institution in Kampala-Uganda, have chosen to break this trend.
They have decided to undertake a multi-million project in honor of their former headteacher, Hajji Abdu Kawaase, who also holds the record for being the longest-serving headmaster of the school from 1978-2001.
Kibuli Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in the Uganda and the East African region.
This project is a testament to their gratitude for his significant impact on the lives of numerous students, many of whom have gone on to become influential individuals serving in various government and private sectors in Uganda and the others parts of the world.
The alumni have initiated a fundraising campaign, aiming to raise UG shs450M to embark on the completion of the construction of the Hajji Abdu Kawaase block, which had faced delays due to various reasons.
The fundraising campaign was launched during the climax of the school’s annual sports gala, graced by the esteemed former headmaster himself.

Beaming with a visible smile, Kawaase expressed his gratitude for the decision to construct a four-story building in his honor, acknowledging their recognition of his years of service.
He attributed the success to God, as the most gracious and wise provider.
Kaawaase called upon all alumni, friends, and well-wishers to contribute towards completing the building, which currently serves as a sick bay for the school.
He recounted the many obstacles he encountered while serving as headmaster, but credited his ability to establish a solid foundation for the school to the grace and kindness of God.
As a result, the school has produced countless successful alumni who have gone on to become prominent leaders in society.
“Am humbled as your former headmaster ‘General’ for coming together with you today as we launch this very important endeavor of raising funds to complete this building you dedicated and named before me while am still alive,” he added.
He asked every former student of his administration, and others, to step up and make their contributions to Kibuli as a token of gratitude for the school’s impact on their lives.
While officiating at the event, the school’s Board Member Hajji Badru Ntege, commended Kaawaase for his efforts.
He emphasized the importance of the alumni coming together to raise the needed fund for the project to be finished as soon as possible.
Hajji Ibrahim Ssemakadde, the current school headteacher, expressed his joy in overseeing his former school.
He extended his gratitude to the school board for their unwavering support, which has facilitated the smooth execution of various programs, including sports activities and other competitive disciplines, in accordance with the national education calendar.
The Kampala Central Legislator, Muhammad Nsereko, emphasized the importance of alumni giving back to their former school.

The President of Alumni, Abas Agaba, expressed gratitude to those who attended the launch event and encouraged them to spread the word to others.
He announced plans for a series of fundraising events, including entertainment activities hosted by different year groups, leading up to a grand dinner in four months to reveal the total amount raised.
“On behalf of the leadership of the alumni, we would like to congratulate and appreciate the good life extended to you (Kawaase) by the Almighty Allah and continue to pray that he preserves you for posterity as this project speedily moves to its logical conclusion,” noted Agaba.
