Kampala-Uganda: The Directorate of Crime Intelligence in Uganda is currently detaining eight individuals who are suspected of being involved in the production, distribution, and sale of counterfeit currencies.
The arrest took place on June 11, 2024 during a well-coordinated operation at Elite Arcade on Nasser Road, shop A-08, in Kampala, Uganda’s Capital.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed that the authorities successfully apprehended the main leader Ronald Mukasa and his accomplices, including Geey Mugumya, Brian Abaho, Joel Kagame, Ronald Ogadi, Shadia Namuwaya, Rodgers Segwayi, and Abu Mayanja.
Counterfeit money in various currencies, such as Ugandan shillings, South Sudanese Pounds, US Dollars, Euros, Rwandan Francs, United Kingdom Pounds, and Kuwaiti Dinars, was seized during the operation.

Additionally, materials used in the production of counterfeit money, such as films, papers with images, chemicals, Computer Processing Units (CPUs), monitors, digital printers, and suspected forged land titles and academic documents, were also confiscated.
Based on our findings, the organization/group is a large-scale criminal operation that functions nationwide, especially near bars, hotels, in bus and taxi parksin various town where they circulate these currencies.
Others allegedly travel to various border points and act as money change agents to those coming in and going out of the country on road.
“They use counterfeit money that flows through the transportation network. Some lurk around foreign exchange bureaus and ambush unsuspecting Ugandans before vanishing. We believe they are receiving financial support from a high-ranking individual. They must be thoroughly questioned until they disclose the identity of their leader,” remarked a trader employed in the same building where they were apprehended.
Owoyesigyire mentioned that the suspects will face charges related to dealing in counterfeits and will be presented in court once the investigations are completed.
He emphasized the police’s unwavering dedication to fighting counterfeit activities and safeguarding the integrity of our financial system.
