The Dairy show writer, Joseph Opio, made history in January when he became the first Ugandan to taste success at the Primetime Emmy Award. But in the few months later he won another award to earn himself unprecedented two Emmy awards in one year.
Comedian Opio won the 2024 Sports Emmy for his outstanding writing long form at a ceremony held in New York City on May 21.
The Emmy award celebrated Opio’s work on “World According to Football” a five-partly documentary narrated by a South African megastar, Trevor Noah.
The Sports Emmy celebrates the best and brightest in American Broadcasting. And Opio has to shrug off the competition from established sports juggernauts like ESPN and HBO.
In his acceptance speech, Opio thanked Trevor Noah for not only narrating his documentary but also his support since the first day they met.
Opio has written about 1,200 episodes for the Dairy Show but World According to Football marked his debut in the world of documentary filmmaking. It was the first time Opio and Trevor expanded their artist collaboration beyond Comedy Center.
Opio was once a Sports desk writer for New Vision before embarked on the journey in comedy.
