Retired Colonel Dr. Warren Kizza Besigye asserts that the citizens of Uganda have the ability to overthrow the current regime of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, led by his former boss and friend, General Kaguta Yoweri Museveni Tibuhaburwa, without resorting to violence, but rather by utilizing their numbers.
Having previously contested and lost the presidential race four times against President Museveni in what he regarded as rigged elections, Besigye chose to maintain a low profile during the recent 2021 general elections.
However, he has now announced his return to active political activism, aligning himself with the forces of change, in order to contribute towards Museveni’s defeat in the upcoming 2026 elections.

Besigye, who now leads the Katonga faction of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, plans to initiate the recruitment of the ‘Power 10’ pressure group across the entire country, in preparation for the 2026 general elections.
This formidable force, under his command, aims to overcome those armed with weapons, relying solely on non-violent means.
He strongly discouraged his supporters from resorting to armed struggle to seize power, emphasizing the potential long-term consequences it could have on the stability of the nation.
While speaking to FDC party leaders from different districts across Lango Sub-region at Lango Quran primary school playground on May 3, 2024, he expressed his intention to form a command consisting of ten individuals like those equipped with firearms.
His aim is to lead this unarmed force to overcome the armed forces of Museveni.
“We are going to build a command from the ten people just like those who are armed. I am going to command the forces without guns to defeat the guns of Museveni,” he noted.
Besigye and his team are currently engaging in consultations with FDC leaders and members regarding the next steps, following a disagreement with the Najjanankumbi faction led by party president Patrick Amuriat and secretary general Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
As the founder and original leader of FDC, he emphasized the importance of establishing a civilian government in Uganda, which he says can only be achieved through a united from with the participation of all forces of change/opposition.
The retired senior soldier, who played a significant role in the National Resistance Army (NRA) that brought the current government to power, emphasized to the leaders that he abandoned his medical profession to join Gen. Museveni in the wilderness, fighting against oppressive rule, with the aim to establish a nation where equality prevails, a vision that was even documented.
However, Besigye expressed his disappointment, highlighting the irony that the very guns they once employed to overthrow tyrannical regimes are now being used to intimidate him and the entire nation.
In their collective announcement delivered by Gongson Otyama, the FDC officials in Lango Sub-region unanimously approved the establishment of a new political party.
