After a year of inactivity, the Uganda Railway Corporation (URC) has announced plans to reactivate railway transportation.
Train services had been stopped due to railway line renovations for about a year, since April 2023.
The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces Engineering unit renovated the line, working on broken lines and hazardous locations to improve traffic.
They replaced the slippers with concrete slippers and tested them for safety and effectiveness, which were all favorable.
To improve passenger flexibility, additional new stages were designated along the 25-kilometer route from Kampala to Namanve, Wakiso district.
According to URC Executive Director David Musoke Bulega, transportation charges will be raised to Uganda shs2000 from the previous shs1000.
Unlike before, the train will perform four journeys, with each costing shs2000.
He stated that the train targets the working class and students.
Bulega encouraged residents near the railway line to avoid depositing rubbish in the railway area.
