The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) held an engagement with a delegation of the European Union (EU) to Uganda ahead of May 3rd World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) Celebration
UJA team was led by the Association’s president Mathias Rukundo while the EU team by H.E Jan Sadek.
The engagement focused on the debilitating press freedom and environmental conservation, ensuring freedom of expression, scientific research, and access to information.
Speaking after the meeting Rukundo applauded EU’s passionate commitment towards the advocacy, promotion and protection of the press freedom.
UJA Management including Emmanuel Kirunda, the Secretary General, Joseph Kwizira , the UJA chief strategist , Isa Kigongo, the external relation manager and others attended the meeting
Prior to World Press Freedom Day, UJA have organized a serial activities including Media Foot Ball Gala aimed at bringing media houses and Journalist together and will take place at City High Secondary School Play Grand on Sunday May 5, 2024

The World Press Freedom Day 2024 will be celebrated under theme “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis”.
The day is celebrated on May 3, 2024, and will take place globally. UNESCO will host the event in Chile in 2024, and will also host an academic conference on May 4, 2024.
The theme focuses on the challenges journalists face in the face of the environmental crisis, including preventing and protecting journalists, ensuring freedom of expression, scientific research, and access to information, Combating disinformation through journalism and promoting media plurality, diversity, and viability
Other topics that will be explored include the risks of digital environments, artificial intelligence, and disinformation, challenges faced by marginalized groups, challenges in journalism education, the future of journalism, and the consequences of traumatic events on journalism practice
Also the crimes, migration, and exile of journalists, disinformation about environmental issues and its impact on public support for climate action are to discussed.
