The government has released yet another batch of road maintenance funds to Local Governments.
The final batch is due about two months before the conclusion of the fiscal year 2023/2024.
Each district was initially given shs1 billion for the fiscal year 2023/2024, however only half of that money was released in the first quarter.
Each district will receive shs500 million as a last installment.
Despite the delayed disbursement of funding, the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) says it is better than nothing.
The association’s Secretary General Richard Okuku confirmed the receipt of the remaining shs500 million by LGs.
“At the start of this financial year, we had a commitment of shs1billion toward road maintenance. We receive sh500million for the first and second quarter and fortunately we did not receive any grants for the third quarter. But as we speak now, this we have received shs500million, which means shs250 for the previous quarter and shs250million for this quarter,” he noted.

Okuku noted that LGs now have two and half months to work on the roads to ensure that goods and services can move easily and ensure people benefit from the good road network.
He urged the LGs to utilize well such that the roads are worked upon.
“They should look at the roads that were passed by the roads committee. This would be very important by the ensuring the utilization of resources to avoid unspent balances being swept off of the accounts of LGs. Let put this money to use because it is meant for service delivery improvement,” he noted.
He stressed that when there are good roads in LGs, it improves trade and many other services.
