The general consensus within the public domain was that Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition (LoP), was likely planning to quit the National Unity Platform (NUP) following his forceful response to his party president Robert Kyagulanyi concerning the corruption accusations.
On the other hand, Mpuuga asserts that despite being one of the original founders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), he has no plans to leave the party, contrary to popular belief.
The party president, Kyagulanyi, along with the National Executive Committee (NEC), had requested Mpuuga to resign from his role as Commissioner of Parliament. Additionally, they demanded that he returns the shs500m “service awards” that they awarded themselves and other commissioners, in a meeting chaired by Speaker of Parliament, Anitah Among.
However, Mpuuga firmly stated during his press conference at parliament on March 26, 2024, that he has no intentions of resigning or relinquishing his position within the party, emphasizing that the allegations made against him were baseless and constituted a severe case of corruption and misuse of power according to the NUP.
