Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has marked the 15th Greening Friday with call for Muslims to plant trees to protect the environment

The annual Greening Friday Day is celebrated every second Friday in the holy month of Ramathan and was graced by the third deputy Prime minister Lukia Nakadama who emphasized the importance of tree planting and dangers of tree cutting.
“Trees are important to mankind because they are instrumental in climate change, provide shelter for human beings and animals, source of fruits and food well as they are medicinal, in addition to being home for animals and birds” Nakadaga said.

During the celebrations, about 2000 trees were distributed to Muslims who attended Juma prayers. The trees include indigenous fruit like jackfruit, Jambula, Avocado and mango and different types of wood trees.
The Secretary General of UMSC, Hajji Abas Mulubya Sekyanzi said tree planting is responsible for all of us since the destruction doesn’t spare anybody.
He said trees are the solution to our survival since we hear the climate in areas without trees.

The initiator of Greening Friday, Aphaw Ssebyala said having created awareness to protect the environment to the extent of experiencing real climate change, tree cutting rate is still high bearing in mind that it takes years to grow.
Ssebyala said the country is experiencing hostile weather partner, landslide such as pronged dry spell, landslide and floods exposing the importance of trees
She said they have distributed and planted over 270,000 trees to respond to 57% reduction on Ugandan’s forest cover in the past 25 years.
The greening Friday is aimed at analyzing the progress achieved by UMSC in promoting the protection of the environment and planning new approaches to address climate change. It was organized by UMSC in conjunction with Energizer Solution Ltd.
