After accepting the resignation of John Baptist Odama from the pastoral Governance of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Gulu (Uganda), Popo Francis appointed Raphael Wokorach to replace him.
Odama requested that when he clocks 75 years, church can consider his retirement now three years ago but his prayers was answered yesterday March 22, 2024 when Pop a appointing his successor .
Raphael Wokorach has been the current Bishop of the Nebbi Diocese and now who has been elevated to the Metropolitan Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese Uganda).
Born on January 21, 1961 in Ojigo, in the Diocese of Arua, he attended St. Charles Lwanga College in Koboko and the Minor Seminary of Arua, he joined the Institute of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus and made his Vows on October 12, 1992.
He studied philosophy at the Uganda Martyrs National Major Seminary of Alokolum, then Theology at Tangaza University College in Nairobi and obtained a Degree in Philosophy. He was ordained a priest on September 25, 1993.
Wokrach headed the initial investigation as Pontifical Commissary, mandated by the Holy See to oversee the process of internal reforms and re-organization of the life of the members and of 53-year-old Institute, founded by two Comboni Missionaries, Bishop Sixtus Mazzoldi and Fr. John Marengoni, in Moroto, Uganda, for the purpose of evangelizing Africa.
Positions held: parish ministry in Uganda (1993-1994); Missionary in the Democratic Republic of Congo, bursar of the Comboni community in Kisangani and formatter in the postulancy of the Institute (1994-2001); Missionary in Togo and formatter of Comboni postulants (2001-2003).
He also worked with the Missionary in Chicago, United States, and formator at the Comboni International Theologian (2003-2007); Missionary in Nairobi, Kenya, Formator and Lecturer at Tangaza University College (2007-2015);
He was a member of the Provincial Council of Kenya and Vice Provincial (2011-2013); Apostolic Visitor of the Apostles of Jesus Congregation (2015-2018) and since 2018 Pontifical Commissioner of the same Congregation based in Nairobi Kenya.
He was appointed Bishop of Nebbi on March 31, 2021 and was consecrated bishop on 14 August 2021.
