Three individuals have been confirmed dead after the boat they were traveling in overturned on Lake Victoria.
The deceased have been identified as Nalongo Naluswa from Bussi, Grace (22-year-old from Kapa Kalebi Balabala parish from Bussi Sub County), and Lucky, a two-year-old male juvenile.
The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, has stated that the Uganda Police Marine officers are currently searching for the remaining three missing individuals who disappeared during the incident on February 12, 2024.
Those still missing were identified as Emmanuel Nsubuga, a 35-year-old boat driver from Kasanje, Francis Mundekye, a 50-year-old from Bushenyi, and an unidentified female known only as Mama from Kisoro.
It is alleged that on February 12, 2024, an engine boat owned by Steven Muragye and driven by Emmanue Nsubuga departed from Balabala landing site around 0100 hours, en route to Nakiwogo.
Onyago revealed that investigations indicate that the boat encountered strong winds in the Kakyanga area, leading to its capsizing.
“The boat was loaded with luggage, about 200 bunches of matooke, 07 sucks of cassava and bags plus 17 passengers including one juvenile,” he noted.
Three bodies were reported to have been recovered and claimed by family members who opted out of having a postmortem examination conducted.
Onyago mentioned that the marine teams are currently searching the waters of Lake Victoria in an effort to locate the remaining bodies.
