The Deputy Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Rose Namayanja, has revealed that the ongoing membership updating process is progressing without any issues.
The registration exercise, scheduled to end on March 17, commenced on March 13, 2024, across the nation.
Namayanja emphasized that only registered members will have the opportunity to participate in the party’s internal structure and primary elections leading up to the 2026 general elections.
She made the remarks during an interview with this publication on March 24 while touring different registration centers in Kampala and Wakiso districts, where she also personally enrolled members in certain branches.
“The NRM register update exercise has commenced with a remarkable turnout of party members, who diligently verified their membership status in the yellow books within their respective villages and branches,” she noted.
She explained that the register would go through the printing process and would be presented to the public for examination before being returned to the national level.
Namayanja said the party’s dedication to removing any potential hindrances related to conducting primaries was explained, along with the implementation of mechanisms to promptly address any concerns raised by members.
She said the party is only registering individuals who are physically present to ensure accurate record-keeping in the yellow book during the registration process.
She also provided assurance that the party would possess a legitimate and certified register, in accordance with the party’s roadmap.
She also mentioned that teams have already been deployed nationwide to ensure a smooth progression of the exercise, with no significant issues reported.
Nekesa Barbara Oundo, the party’s National Treasurer, highlighted the significance of updating the membership of the party.
She mentioned that the same register would be utilized for the upcoming structure elections.
Oundo urged members to verify that their information was correctly recorded, emphasizing the importance of aligning with NIRA’s records.
“I urge everyone to utilize these five days to crosscheck their details in the NRM membership register,” she urged. “Remember, this is not a voter’s register but a register for party faithful aged 16 and above. Let’s approach this as a collective responsibility, with everyone playing a vigilant role,” she added.
