President Yoweri Museveni has bestowed the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Commander) medal upon Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, the vice president of Uganda. Alupo, who also serves as the Katakwi district woman Member of Parliament, received the prestigious award during the Women’s Day celebrations at Boma Grounds in Katakwi district on March 8, 2024

The ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander) is the highest Civilian honour in Uganda, established in 2001 under the National Honours and Awards Act as amended.
President Museveni commended Alupo for her resilience, dedication, outstanding achievements, and exceptional contribution towards the country’s development.
The President stressed that Alupo’s commitment and impactful efforts in empowering women “have earned her this prestigious recognition”, solidifying her position as a prominent figure in the nation’s leadership landscape.
A total of 53 other individuals were also honored for their exceptional contributions in various fields.
Notable among them were Peter Pex Paak, the Soroti Resident City Commissioner, and Teddy Acham, the National Resistance Movement ruling party mobilizer, both of whom were acknowledged for their unwavering dedication and commitment.
Maj. Gen. George Igumba, the Chancery to the Presidential awards committee, clarified that the ‘Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa’ (Grand Commander) is exclusively bestowed upon a select group of leaders who have made significant contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic development.
Alupo joins a distinguished list of African leaders who have received the respected accolade, including the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Jakaya Kikwete (former presidents of Tanzania), President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Theodora Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, and former president Armando Guebuza of Mozambique.
