LORD MAYOR Erias Lukwago together with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among and other City Political leaders, today addressed Kampala Capital City Authority( KCCA) Sanitation workers who stormed Parliament protesting for four-months unpaid salaries and attempts to conscript them into a SACCO against their will
Lukwago informed them that following engagements earlier today, the directive giving the workers an ultimatum to join Seven Hills Association by March 2024 before they can be paid their wages was rescinded
This comes against the backdrop of the management failure to implement a Reservation Scheme that was proposed by the Lukwago and adopted by the Authority Council which, interim, guaranteed the continued employment of the sanitation workers and independent operations of their SACCOs
The Speaker of the Parliament Anita Among assured the workers that they shall be paid immediately and scheduled a meeting on Tuesday 5th. March 2024, with the Leadership of the City to resolve the matter.

On Tuesday workers stated that a great injustice is being occasioned on them by not only delaying their pay which is an entitlement, but also attempts at conscripting them into an association against their will is a violation of their rights.
As the head of the City Executive Committee, Lukwago proposed that the Authority Council resolved to operationalize a reservation scheme in which the sanitation workers would legally operate under their registered SACCOs, independent of other associations as a means to secure their employment but also provide welfare for the urban poor in the City.
Yesterday at Parliament Workers Member of Parliament Agnes Kunihira Abwoli asked the House to fast – track the Employment Amendment Bill that is envisaged to curb exploitation of Workers and generally violation of Labour’ rights
She said many employers are hiring and firing workers verbally while those on jobs are paid “peanuts” and their afflictions are never addressed
Legislators have taken KCCA to task to explain why its casual workers have gone five months without pay. Speaker of Parliament Hon. Annet Anita Among has directed the Finance Ministry to explain availability of funds earmarked for payment of KCCA workers.
