The President of Uganda, Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, has confirmed his particulars today while officially initiating the update of the party’s membership register.

This activity is a crucial part of the party’s electoral plan leading up to the 2026 general elections.
President Museveni arrived at the party’s headquarters minutes past midday at the party’s head offices in Nakasero, a Kampala suburb on February 28, 2024.
He was welcomes by Uganda’s Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, the party’s first Vice Chairperson Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, the second Vice Chairperson who also serves as the first Deputy Premier Rebecca Kadaga, and the party’s Secretary General Richard Todwong, among other party officials.

During his speech, Museveni stressed the significance of the exercise in accurately determining the number of party supporters.
The President underlined the significance of this strong nucleus, stating that every book will be returned to its respective village for individuals to verify their specific details.
Additionally, he mentioned that any missing information can be added including those who need to join NRM.
Furthermore, he emphasized that it is now the responsibility of the party leaders to rally Ugandans and garner their support for the NRM.
“Mobilization in form of holding meetings and rallies is good but all those efforts will be very easy if you go back to the NRM principles and understand them. These principles are a diagnosis of the problems of Uganda and then a prescription. Therefore, as you mobilise, understand these principles yourself,” he noted.

The further emphasized the significance of party leaders and cadres comprehending the country’s needs through a thorough understanding of the issues, thus enabling them to effectively mobilize and raise awareness among the public.
In regards to this initiative, Todwong (secretary general of the party) highlighted its crucial role in preparing for the upcoming 2026 general election. He emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to ensuring President Museveni’s legacy and his positive contributions continue.
“We are still asking for your good will to stand in 2026. Every district is sending a memorandum asking you to offer yourself in 2026,” he added.
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, the chairperson of the party’s electoral commission, the roadmap will kick off with the display and update of the party register in all villages throughout the country between March 13 and 17, 2024.

Between March 19th and 24th, Tanga announced that the party will be inviting expressions of interest and selecting candidates for the party structures at the village and cell level.
He said from March 25th to 26th, comprehensive campaigns will be conducted in each village.
On March 27th, the party has planned to conduct polling and announce the results for party structures at the village level.
Moving forward, the compilation of the register will begin at the parish level on April 5th.

Subsequently, on April 12th, the compilation of the voters register and the polling of party structures will be carried out at the Sub County and town council levels.
The exercise is scheduled to proceed at the municipal and city division level on April 16th, followed by the district and city levels on April 19th. The period between April 20th and 30th, will be dedicated to compiling the register and transmitting the final results to the party secretariat.
The plan for selecting the party presidential flag bearer candidate, parliamentary candidates, LC5 chairpersons, municipal mayors, and other positions will be revealed at a future date.
