The Kagadi territorial police have arrested one Stephen Tibihikira to assist in the investigations of a fatal traffic accident that occurred on February 26, 2024 around 08:00 am at Iguruka.
The accident happened during a demonstration by residents of Muhoro, Bwikara, and surrounding areas, due to the deteriorating state of the roads.
Preliminary reports indicate that the area district chairperson and his team responded to assess the situation.
However, a vehicle he was traveling in, registered as UG 6998M and belonging to the District Health Office, driven by Tibihikira , a Kagadi local government driver, was traveling at high speed when it struck and killed one Magezi Tumuhaise, 25, a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Sub county.
Allan Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesman, said the deceased person was reportedly among the demonstrators.
However, he said the driver fled the scene afterward, but was later arrested for questioning.
The victim’s body was conveyed to the mortuary. Hakiza encouraged the community members to always seek intervention from relevant authorities for amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to unlawful assemblies and illegal demonstration.
