Zainabu Kamongi, a 32-year-old entrepreneur residing in Railway Cell, Kasese Municipality, contacted her mother to inform her about a distressing incident of being kidnapped.
She revealed that she and another woman had been forcefully taken by a group of eight armed individuals while they were in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The kidnappers had allegedly demanded a ransom in exchange for their release.
The Uganda Police Force (UPF) spokesperson, Fred Enanga, announced that a report of a kidnapping had been made to the police in the area.
As a result, a Joint Task Team consisting of the police, Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF), Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Internal Security Organisation (ISO), and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) was formed, kicked off investigations.
Utilizing advanced surveillance methods, the task team successfully located the individual in question, who was hiding in Margherita streets in Kasese Municipality.
Subsequently, she was apprehended and taken into custody.
Following her arrest, she was brought before the court and charged with providing false information to the police and self-kidnapping, as stipulated in section 68 of the Police Act.
In accordance with the law, knowingly providing false information to the police is considered an offense, punishable by imprisonment for a maximum period of one year upon conviction.
