The police have netted a suspect who has been allegedly vending counterfeit exam papers on social media that are claimed to be Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) exams.
The UNEB’s public relations officer, Jennifer Kalule, said the 20-year-old suspect, identified as Abdu Kareem Seguya, was trending as Fresh Kareem on his social media channels.
He is alleged to have shared video clips of past papers. “According to his confession, he would erase the actual year and superimpose it to appear like a 2023 examination paper,” she added.
Investigations indicate the suspect is a 2020 Uganda Certificate Examination (UCE) candidate who wrote his examinations in 2021.
“He is currently in building and construction, but says he did the act for purposes of getting a big following,” she added.
The suspect is held on accusations of assisting and abetting examination malpractice as well as unlawful possession of examination paper, material, or information, Kalule emphasized.
She said Seguyal will be arraigned before the court, after complete investigations are done.
In a related development, Gilbert Luyima, 49, was also detained by police in Old Kampala for allegedly vending material and information that were supposed to be UNEB exams.
Along with him was William Suuna, the head teacher of Old Kampala Senior Secondary School S.S.S., who was allegedly going to purchase the aforementioned counterfeit materials.
“Luyima was arrested from the office of the Head teacher,” Nalule noted.
She did, however, add that both of these instances are still being investigated, and anyone who may still be at large are still being sought out.
She cited that Section 25 (2) of the UNEB Act 2021 states that a person who willfully or negligently, assists or causes any candidate to obtain or gain unauthorized possession of any examination paper, examination material, any other material and information, commits an offence and is liable on conviction, to a fine, not exceeding two thousand currency points (sh 40 million), or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding ten years or both.
According to the Act, an Examination paper, Material or information includes the electronic version of an examination paper, examination material or any other material or information; and the electronic transmission of an examination material or any other information.
