A 43-year-old female peasant from Warot village in the Tegeres sub county of the Kapchorwa district is being detained by the territorial police in Sipi and Kapchorwa for allegedly killing her husband over sh200,000, that she had saved for her children’s school fees.
Juliet Chelangat, is said to have murdered Stephen Namawangala 40, after he allegedly stole her cash savings and failed to refund it.
It is said that on October 4, 2023, Chelangat withdrew her savings from the Kabati village savings group totaling sh200,000 to pay for their children’s school tuition, but on October 8, 2023, her husband (Namawangala) took the money out of where she had stored it and spent the entire sum on alcohol.
Namawangala had allegedly agreed to pay it back on October 9, 2023, but didn’t.
The pair is alleged to have gotten into an argument at around 11 p.m. that turned physical.
In the process the suspect (Chelangat) is said to have pushed her husband to the ground and he became unconscious.
According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, a guy passed away as he was being transported to Kapchorwa hospital.
“The suspect was arrested and detained in custody for murder,” he added.
In a related development, the police and UPDF in the Nabilatuk district are looking for Lance Corporal (LCpl) Michael Ruhuriza of the Lopetageit army detach, under the 49 Battalion, in connection with the alleged shooting death of Mercy Irama, a 20-year-old woman he had been living with for just five months.
The fatal event is said to have occurred after the deceased allegedly took his sh150, 000.
“The money was part of his loan, obtained from the Wazalendo SACCO. The OC detachment had prevailed over the family, following repeated complaints of theft of money, but all in vain,” Enanga noted.
According to investigations, the suspect on that fateful day returned home from the pub about 10:00pm, grabbed his gun, and shot the victim.
Later, he escaped after dropping the gun with 109 bullets around 120 meters away.
The nine gunshot rounds, according to Enanga, were found at the site.
He said the UPDF contacted the victim’s family in order to arrange for the victim’s burial, the.
The police spokesperson said the two cases demonstrate the hazards that can exist in homes where there is a lack of mutual respect or understanding.
Before it’s too late and life-threatening, Enanga advised spouses or partners in toxic situations to seek help from the Child and Family Protection Unit.
Enanga said the nine bullet shells were recovered from the scene.
He said the UPDF got in touch with the victim’s relatives for burial arrangements.
He further noted that the two incidents show the dangers in homes, where there is no respect and or mutual understanding.
Enanga advised spouses or partners in toxic relationships to seek help from the Child and Family Protection Unit, before it is too late and life threatening.
