In preparation of Uttarakhand Day, the Indian Association yesterday October 15, 2023 started the Inter-State Cricket Tournament aimed at bringing all Indians in Uganda together through sports.
Speaking during the official opening of the Inter-State cricket Tournament at Makerere University Business School Nakawa Alok Badoni, the Chairman Uharkhand Association said the tournament is one of its kind in Uganda and is intended to raise awareness about Uttarakhand Day.
According to Badoni, Indian Association in Uganda have 40 associations and they have come up with 16 teams participating in the tournament, saying the winners will be recognized during the celebration Uttarakhand Day that will take place on November 9, 2023 at Indian High Commission.
Uttarakhand Day, also referred to as Uttarakhand Divas, is celebrated as the state foundation day of Indian state Uttarakhand. It is observed annually on 9 November
On November 9, 2000, Uttarakhand became India’s 27th state, carved out of the hilly regions of undivided Uttar Pradesh. The formation of the state involved a long socio-political struggle— the first demands go back as far as the early 19th century, while Uttarakhand became an entity of its own only in the beginning of the 21st.
The day is now celebrated as Uttarakhand State Foundation Day or Uttarakhand Divas every year.
The Princely State acceded to the Union of India in 1949. In 1950, this United Province was renamed Uttar Pradesh. However, the government of Uttar Pradesh could not meet the needs of people belonging to this Himalayan region.
Hence, people started demanding a separate state following the formation of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal. There was a widespread statehood movement in the 90s which became violent in 1994. The activists of this statehood movement kept on struggling for years and finally, on November 9, 2000, Uttaranchal, the 27th state of India, was formed by the Uttar Pradesh Regulation Act, of 2000.
The tournament is sponsored by the Indian High Commission in Uganda, express, Dunlop Tyres and others.
